Wilson statement on deaths of children in care
CALGARY, AB (January 8, 2014): Today, Wildrose Calgary-Shaw MLA Jeff Wilson released the following statement in response to new information reported today on deaths of children in provincial care: “I was absolutely shocked and heartbroken to hear that the real number of children involved with the provincial care system who have died is 596 more than first reported in the Edmonton Journal and Calgary Herald in November.
“I was also upset to learn that an additional four children had died between June and September of last year, rendering Premier Alison Redford’s assurances that the system was fixed in 2012 completely false and misleading. “Quite clearly, this is a system that is deeply flawed, resulting in untold pain, misery and grief for hundreds of Alberta families. I’m pleased that this information has come forward and the announcement of additional efforts to help remedy the many problems the system faces is a step in the right direction. “However, Wildrose continues to believe that nothing short of a full judicial public inquiry will provide us with the answers we are going to need to correct course and fix the system. We will continue to advocate for an inquiry and will be watching closely to see what comes of the roundtable discussion as well as the plan to implement previously ignored recommendations. “These new numbers should be a wake-up call for the government to take whatever action is necessary to bring about the change we need to see.”
