Wildrose status of women shadow minister welcomes awareness campaign

EDMONTON, AB (September 1, 2015): In response to the I Believe You initiative launched yesterday by the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services and the Alberta government, Wildrose Shadow Minister for the Status of Women, Angela Pitt, released the following statement.

"I am heartened to see the announcement of the new I Believe You campaign for our province.

"By telling a survivor of sexual assault that you believe them, you are helping them to take an important first step in their journey to get help and seek justice.

"Sexual assault is something that lurks in the background of our society. Showing yourself to be a compassionate voice to someone who is a victim of sexual assault helps them begin their process of recovery and healing, and will help to make our communities safer.

"The fact of the matter is that sexual assault affects all of us. It weakens the fabric of our society and takes a heavy toll on survivors, their friends, families and communities. Talking about sexual assault, and teaching all Albertans on how to be supportive allies to survivors, will make Alberta better."
