Wildrose calls for suspension of Sandhu and appointment of independent investigator
EDMONTON, AB (May 14, 2013): Wildrose Official Opposition Leader Danielle Smith released the following statement today after news reports involving PC MLA Peter Sandhu: “This morning, serious allegations were reported in the media about the conduct of Edmonton-Manning MLA Peter Sandhu.
The integrity of the legislative process hinges on MLAs having the confidence of the people who voted for them. This morning’s revelations that Mr. Sandhu allegedly filed an inaccurate sworn affidavit seriously compromises that confidence and thus the integrity of our system. “Mr. Sandhu is undoubtedly entitled to the presumption of innocence, but on the face of documents presented there are significant discrepancies between records filed with the courts and records held by the Legislative Assembly Office. Therefore, I call on Premier Alison Redford to immediately suspend Mr. Sandhu from the government caucus pending the outcome of a complete investigation into the matter. I further call on Premier Redford to instruct the Justice Minster to appoint an independent prosecutor to supervise the investigation. “It is important to all Albertans, including Mr. Sandhu, that this issue be sorted out promptly and in a manner which is above suspicion.”
