Wildrose calls for Allen to resign seat and for by-election in Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo
CALGARY, AB (July 16, 2013): Former PC MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo Mike Allen should immediately resign from his seat in the Legislative Assembly after he was arrested in connection with a prostitution sting in Minnesota, the Wildrose Official Opposition said today.
“Albertans expect their elected officials to follow a higher ethical standard of behaviour and to obey the law, both of which Mr. Allen failed to do,” Wildrose Official Opposition Leader Danielle Smith said. “For an MLA to behave in this manner while travelling abroad on government business is unacceptable and he owes it to the people of Fort McMurray and all Albertans to immediately resign.” Wildrose House Leader Rob Anderson said that the people of Fort McMurray must be given the opportunity to select a new representative in a by-election given the embarrassment Mr. Allen’s conduct has caused both the province and the city. “Mr. Allen has broken the trust of Fort McMurray voters. He promised to represent them with integrity and honour and the people elected him on that basis,” Anderson said. “The fact that he has been arrested in a foreign country while representing his province and community, and has confirmed that he did indeed do what he had been accused of, it is only proper to allow the residents of Fort McMurray to have the opportunity to select a new representative who will uphold the dignity of the office.”
