Towle statement on Michener Centre remaining open
RED DEER, AB (September 19, 2014): Wildrose Human Services and Seniors Critic Kerry Towle released the following statement today following news that the Michener Centre in Red Deer will remain open:
“Today’s news is a monumental victory for the residents of Michener Centre, their families and all those who fought so hard to have the decision to close the facility reversed.
“We simply would not be here today without the passion, determination and love of so many who never gave up hope that the PC government would come to its senses and keep Michener open. I congratulate everybody involved for keeping up the fight and seeing it through to today. This victory belongs to you.
“However, today is also a sobering reminder of the uncertainty and upheaval residents and families have had to endure over the last 18 months. The fact is, 40 residents have already been needlessly removed from Michener – away from the comforts and care of what, for many of them, is the only home they’ve ever known.
“It is my sincere hope that the PC government has seen the error of its ways and that this is not merely a decision made for political reasons. It’s imperative that the PCs learn why closing Michener was the wrong decision in the first place to make sure nothing like this happens again.”
