Towle statement on foster care neglect and abuse
INNISFAIL, AB (May 26, 2014): Today, Wildrose Humans Services Critic Kerry Towle released the following statement on reports of a physician raising concerns about foster child’s safety:
“The PC government continues to put children in foster care at risk by ignoring the warnings of health professionals. The report of a child being returned to foster care after suffering severe burns to the face are troubling on their own. But ignoring the attending physician’s concerns who said these burns are evidence of either severe abuse or neglect is completely outrageous.
“When a doctor identifies evidence of possible child abuse, it’s just common sense that authorities would speak to that physician. In this case, that didn’t happen.
“An investigation into alleged abuse that doesn’t include the child’s doctor is simply unacceptable. Obviously there’s a culture within Child Intervention Services that has to change.
“Doctors shouldn’t have to go to the media to raise their concerns about the welfare of children in government care. I fully expect the Human Services Minister Manmeet Bhullar to not only step in and protect this child but to make sure that any physician who identifies evidence of child abuse in the future is immediately included in the investigation into the welfare of that child.”
