Throne speech doesn't deliver for Albertans
EDMONTON, AB (March 3, 2014): Wildrose Official Opposition Leader Danielle Smith released the following statement on today’s Speech From the Throne: “Today’s throne speech was an opportunity for Premier Alison Redford and her PC government to hit the reset button on several fronts and lay out a positive and achievable vision for Alberta’s future.
Instead, she offered Albertans little assurance that her government has their best interests at heart and gave no indication of change in approach. “Beyond a promise for more flawed Family Care Clinics, the speech had nothing to say on Albertans’ top policy priority – health care. Excessive wait times for emergency rooms and key treatments and procedures continue to lag behind the rest of Canada. However, this government continues to ignore the issue. “The speech recognized the significant and unique pressures our municipalities face, but offered nothing in the way of the stable, predictable, no-strings-attached funding they require. “Finally, the speech made clear that more debt is in Alberta’s future, with absolutely no plan to repay any of it. For a government that claims to be investing so much in future generations, they seem more content than ever to saddle those generations with billions in new debt. “Albertans were hoping to see some humility and some leadership from a PC government that desperately needs a change. Instead, they got a laundry list of vague promises and an uninspiring indication that the status quo will remain.”
