Smith statement on BC rejection of Northern Gateway Pipeline
EDMONTON, AB (May 31, 2013): Wildrose Official Opposition Leader Danielle Smith today released the following statement after British Columbia Premier Christy Clark announced her province rejected the Northern Gateway Pipeline: “It’s disappointing that today British Columbia has decided against a project that is in Canada’s economic interests, but it’s crucial that we don’t lose sight of what needs to be done – which is to construct a pipeline to the west coast.
“I still believe there is a solution to be had. Premier Clark was just re-elected on a platform of economic growth and I do believe she is open to the right project that meets all of BC’s needs. I think her decision today provides an opportunity to press the reset button, start fresh and come up with an approach that benefits everyone involved. “It’s critical that Premier Alison Redford does not take Premier Clark’s decision personally. She must set aside personality and work with Premier Clark to achieve what is in Alberta’s interests. It also may be an opportunity to devise a solution through the New West Partnership by bringing in Premier Brad Wall as a mediator. “Alberta must regroup and redouble its efforts in order to get a west coast pipeline built and our product to market.”
