Smith, Forsyth to oppose pay hikes, gold-plated pensions
EDMONTON, AB (June 7, 2012): Wildrose Official Opposition Leader Danielle Smith and Calgary-Fish Creek MLA Heather Forsyth will vigorously oppose proposals to increase cabinet salaries and implement a gold-plated pension plan for MLAs when the Legislature’s Members Services Committee convenes today.
The committee meets today and will consider Justice John Major’s MLA compensation review, which recommends a pay hike for cabinet ministers and a return to gold-plated, defined-benefit MLA pension plan. Smith and Forsyth are the Wildrose representatives on the Members’ Services Committee. “Nobody I talked to during the election campaign told me they wanted raises for cabinet ministers or better pensions for MLAs,” Smith said. “This is about showing leadership, respecting taxpayers and doing our jobs as guardians of public dollars.” Smith and Forsyth call on the other members of the Members’ Services Committee to join Wildrose members in rejecting these two proposals. “I hope the PC members of the committee will agree that these two proposals are the wrong way to go,” Forsyth said. “They have to start demonstrating to Albertans that they are serious about changing their culture of entitlement.” The meeting starts at 11:30 a.m. in Committee Room A in the Legislature Annex.
