Prentice awards pension top up to senior executives
EDMONTON, AB (March 17, 2015): While Premier Jim Prentice is threatening the largest tax increase in Alberta history on the backs of families, he’s actually increasing the pension top ups of the highest paid executives in his government, Wildrose Leader Heather Forsyth said today.
According to reports, senior government officials making $140,000 or more will see the taxpayer funded portion of their pension increased by a whopping 22 per cent.
“It’s looking more and more like this Premier genuinely blames Albertans for our fiscal challenges and not his own PC government, because those around him in senior government positions are doing better now than ever and Albertans are sacrificing,” Forsyth said. “Higher taxes and golden handshakes for managers and PC appointees. It’s just more of the same broken leadership from this Premier.”
Today in Question Period Prentice dodged questions around the pension top ups and refused to clearly commit to scrapping these handouts going forward, a position the Wildrose has held for years.
“Time after time, the Premier has said, ‘we’re all in this together,’ but his actions don’t follow his words,” Forsyth said. “If our financial circumstances are as bad as the premier says surely we don’t need these pension top ups for senior government staff. A Wildrose government would immediately address this kind of entitlement in government.”
