Lukaszuk misleading Albertans on parental education rights: Anderson
EDMONTON, AB (March 15, 2012): Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk is directly misleading concerned parents who seek to have their right to choose the education that is best for their children protected under Bill 2 the Education Act, Wildrose Education Critic Rob Anderson said today.
According to a report in the Calgary Herald today, Lukaszuk claims that amendments made to the Education Act recognize, “that parents have paramount responsibility and the right to educate children with regard to religion, morality and ethical standards.” But last night in the House, Lukaszuk and other PC members voted down an amendment put forward by Anderson in the Assembly with the exact language the Minister claimed to have supported. As it stands, the current amendment passed by the government still fails to recognize that right. “It is disappointing and dishonest for this minister to try and claim credit for something that he in fact stood up and voted against,” Anderson said. “Parents deserve the reassurance that their rights to decide what is best for their children’s education will not be overruled by the governing party of the day.” The Wildrose Caucus stands for free enterprise, less government, increased personal freedom and democracy.
