EDMONTON, AB (November 20, 2013): Today, Wildrose Health Critic Heather Forsyth slammed Health Minister Fred Horne for defending the re-appointment of Don Sieben as Chair of the AHS Audit and Finance Committee that oversees the $10 billion AHS budget.
Sieben was previously fired by Horne for refusing to cut executive bonuses and oversaw the AHS audit and finance committee when the Auditor General slammed the health authority for $100 million in questionable expenses. Horne defended the hiring and said he was, “eminently qualified.” “It’s hard to believe that Minister Horne could not find anyone else qualified to take the position. I wonder how many people were actually interviewed,” Forsyth said. “If this government was serious about finding those most qualified to oversee our health care system, then why is the Minister re-appointing an individual he fired just months ago.” Forsyth also questioned Horne for saying that the new individual on the committee is qualified to provide scrutiny of AHS financials, in light of the Auditor General’s past findings. “This just sends the wrong message to taxpayers and the front line workers who hold our health care system together,” Forsyth said.
