EDMONTON, AB (July 28, 2014): Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith issued the following statement on Eid al-Fitr:
Eid al-fitr marks the end of the intense spiritual renewal of Ramadan in the Islamic faith.
For our Alberta Muslim community, it means breaking the month long fast by observing a three day celebration; a celebration well earned and deserved after fasting through the long Alberta summer days. The celebration includes Sadaga Al-Fitr – a donation of food made by every man, woman and child, or Zakat al-fitr, a practice of giving money to charity.
On the day of Eid Muslims gather to perform the eid prayer followed by gathering of family and friends, gift giving and extending well wishes for the holiday.
Today I encourage all Albertans to join me in recognizing the tremendous contributions made by the Alberta Muslim community and to pass on our well wishes for celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
Kul 'am wa enta bi-khair!
