Better support for post-secondary needed: Pedersen

MEDICINE HAT, AB (February 13, 2014): The PC government needs to  better support post-secondary institutions as they strive to get better value for tax dollars, Wildrose Culture, Innovation, and Advanced Education Critic Blake Pedersen said today.

Pedersen noted that today’s Auditor General report includes a number of repeat recommendations that have outlined to the government the steps that need to be taken to ensure better value for money at Alberta’s post-secondary institutions. A sample of the repeated recommendations include:

  • Recommendation 5: improve financial reporting
  • Recommendation 6: implement and enforce procedures for codes of conduct and conflict of interest
  • Recommendation 7: improve internal controls at the bookstore
  • Recommendation 8: implement proper purchase controls

“The Auditor General states that there have been improvements as a result of his previous reports, however there are still a number of troubling recommendations he has made to specific post-secondary institutions,” Pedersen said. “The government needs to ensure that they are providing effective support to these institutions so these recommendations can be followed and so taxpayer dollars make it into classrooms instead of bureaucracy.”
