Airdrie family deserves fair investigation into dropped sex assault case: Anderson

EDMONTON, AB (November 2, 2012): After having questions about a dropped Airdrie sex assault case during question period heckled by several PC members and being cut off by the PC Speaker, the Wildrose Official Opposition is pleased the government may be changing their tune by promising an investigation into why the case was thrown out.

However, Wildrose MLA for Airdrie Rob Anderson said comments made in the media from the Alberta Justice department appear to be pre-judging the investigation’s results. The victim’s family was told the case was thrown out due to a lack of resources that caused administrative delays, but a ministry official is today quoted as saying that is “categorically” not the reason.  “We’re pleased the government has agreed to investigate the matter but it looks as though their mind is already made up,” Anderson said. “This victim and her family were already denied their day in court. At the very least, they deserve a fair and unbiased investigation as to why, and the Alberta public is entitled to a full report.”  The assaults on the victim began when she was nine years old and continued over several years.  In 2009, a man was charged with sexual assault in connection with the attacks, but a judge threw the case out last month because it took too long to get to trial.  Anderson attempted to ask about the case in the Legislature yesterday but was initially shut down when too many PC MLAs objected to the questions and Speaker Gene Zwozdesky inexplicably cut off Anderson's microphone in response. Anderson was eventually able to ask the questions. The Speaker told Anderson he did not need to meet with him after question period to discuss the incident as the Speaker had stated he would during question period and the PC MLA who interjected during the exchange apologized to Anderson after QP.  “I hope we can all co-operate now to help this family get the answers they deserve,” Anderson said. "This shouldn't be about politics - the fact is these are tough questions and the Government needs to answer them. If it makes some of them feel uncomfortable - tough! Imagine how the victim and their family must feel.”
